Me Generation

Trophies for everyone, regardless of who wins and loses. Preschoolers singing songs about how special they are. Individual focused websites like myspace. What impact has all this had on high school and college students, who are being called the me generation? This clip from NBC got me thinking, what impact does this have on mission in our society?

It is a predictable outcome for the well-intentioned but misdirected self-esteem movement of the last couple of decades. Some of us who teach about child development (esp. those in Christian education?) have been preaching this for a number of years. It will undoubtedly contribute to a consumerist mentality, and that has implications for ministry. Awareness of the impact (which, of course, is generalized and not applicable to all youth; this will invite challenge from those who don't want to believe it, but that evidence is more anecdotal) is a good first step.
